Painter and sculptor Moira Geoffrion reflects on receiving the Lumi Award.
Moira Geoffrion, former head of the University of Arizona Arts department, was recently awarded a "Lumie," one of 10 awards the Tucson Pima Arts Council bestows each year.
Geoffrion's Lumie recognized her contributions to arts education, an award she says has a lot to do with the way she was taught as an art student in the 60's.
"The teachers then were very aggressive and their philosophy was knock the student down, if they stand up knock them down again," says Geoffrion, who describes herself as one of the surviving driven artists of that time.
Geoffrion joins Arizona Illustrated and describes her teaching philosophy, which involves nurturing and mentoring students so "they do not finish school and are totally lost."
Excellent examples of how art education can support and inspire emerging artists, and how a 'retired' teacher is not a 'retired' artist, but continues to explore and be relevant. Thank you Moira for your many years of service at the University of Arizona. Keep going. Never stop. Success is steady work.
CONGRATULATIONS ! I'm so happy for you and so proud of you for this wonderful recognition! You have made such a difference in so many lives.
