Sean Arce, director of Mexican American Studies for TUSD, and Jeffrey Milem, associate dean for academic affairs with the UA College of Education, discuss the ethnic studies debate.
Ethnic studies in the Tucson Unified School District have come under fire from the state, with a final ruling on the classes at Tucson High Magnet School due on April 18.
Accusations about the program and the state's stance have sparked a dialogue about the value of ethnic studies curricula. Jeffrey Milem Ph.D., Associate Dean for Academic Affairs at the UA College of Education, and Sean Arce, director of Mexican American Studies for TUSD, visit the Arizona Illustrated studio to talk about the importance of developing and teaching such curricula. Milem, who's also the Ernest W. McFarland Distinguished Professor in Leadership for Education Policy and Reform, explains the history of ethnics studies and the pair talk about the partnership the two institutions have formed to advance this kind of teaching.
