State Senator Paula Aboud and former Tucson Mayor George Miller, both Democrats, are holding a forum to answer questions about a proposal to tax all Arizonans at the same income tax rate. The two are against the proposal, and say it would hurt lower-earning residents while giving a tax break to top earners.
Supporters say taxing everyone at the same rate makes for a more fair and simplified tax system. The proposal, which passed the Arizona House last year but failed in the Arizona Senate, would have reduced the number of tax credits or deductions taxpayers can claim. Supporters say that means everyone does end up paying about the same rate.
But, to Aboud, it doesn't matter whether the rate is about the same for everyone, because the proposal would equate to a tax increase for most Arizonans.
"This flat tax is putting the burden now, again, on the people that need help the most," Aboud said.
