Disgruntled and disappointed by the Republican-led state legislature's proposals and positions, prominent Tucson Democrat Paul Eckerstrom made a bold proposal of his own: perhaps Pima County should secede from the state of Arizona.

As leader of the Start Our State movement, the former Democratic Party chairman for Pima County and—in a short-lived stint—former chairman of the Democratic Party for Arizona is raising eyebrows. In this Arizona Illustrated Political Focus, Eckerstrom explains the rationale behind his push for separation.

A great idea. 2 more US senators from a border state. 2 more US senators from the southwest. More local representation. Smaller government.
