Tony Paniagua interviews two members from the Tucson Violet Society, President Kathy Bell and member Anne-Lee Tomczyk. The two women talk about African Violets and about their group and an upcoming sale and display September 17 and 18 at Foothills Mall in Tucson.

African violets, one of the most popular flowering house plants in the world, have their own local organization, the Tucson African Violet Society with a goal of teaching the public how to grow violets in the desert.

The group, which has been around for more than 56 years, is home to 50 members that meet three times a month. They provide educational information on growing the flowers at events and showing sales.

"I would recommend it to anybody. I would recommend it especially to parents who have children, to teach them how to care for house plants and grow, so that they can do that throughout their life," says Kathy Bell, president of the Tucson African Violet Society.

Growing the beautiful, velvety plants is not as diffcult as one might imagine, Bell says.

I loved the violets you chose for the interview! Nicely done. Can't wait for the sale!
