US Department of Education asks Congress for more new, expanding schools.

Listen:

The U.S. Department of Education announced Tuesday it will give Arizona $15.7 million for new or expanding charter schools.

Federal education officials said in a press release that the grant should also go toward "establishing rigorous performance expectations for all public charter schools, including ensuring equity for all students."

The Department of Education made similar grants to other states.

It also asked Congress to appropriate more money for state departments of education that were granted money.

It requested another $7.9 million for Arizona charter schools.
