“Studies have shown that this is one of the best ways to reduce stress for the shelter population,” said Justin Gallick, with Pima Animal Care Center.

A Colorado State University researcher determined dogs in shelter environments were less likely to bark and more likely to sleep when classical music was playing, according to the county’s animal care center.

“The music will allow them to have a more normal situation,” Gallick said. “And increase their adoptability allow families to see pets in a less stressful situation and be able to make a better decision for what animal will work best in their household.”

Since animals don’t have the option of using earplugs to tune out the sound of music, staff will monitor animals for signs of agitation, shelter officials said.
