October Heat Breaks Records in Tucson, at 96 Degrees

Daily high records were broken twice last week, with more record heat possible.

Tucson hit 96 degrees on Friday and Saturday last week, the warmest it has ever been in town on those two dates.

Average daily highs have been above normal since Oct. 6.

Why is it so hot?

“We’ve had an extended period of time of an area of high pressure that’s just been parked over the desert Southwest for quite a while now," said National Weather Service Meteorologist Jeff Davis. "That’s kept most of the weather systems skirting to the north of the region.”

A storm system caused somewhat cooler days on Monday and Tuesday, but Davis said forecasts show temperatures will climb again, and the area may see more record-breaking heat before the weekend.
