Food Bank Wants to Help Local Farmers Make Their Produce More Available

$100K grant from feds may help the cause.

The Community Food Bank of Southern Arizona is taking a $100,000 award from the U.S. Department of Agriculture to help local farmers increase the availability of their produce.

The Building Capacity in the Regional Food Supply Chain grant will come over the next two years, and the food bank will use the extra funds to establish a local farmers' cooperative.

“(Local food producers) can share techniques and assistance, get business development support, and then use the capacity that we have at the food bank to aggregate and distribute food efficiently,” said Robert Ojeda, vice president of the Community Food Resource Center.

The food bank hopes aiding local food producers hone their business practices, farming techniques, and distribution efforts can build up the local food industry in Southern Arizona.
