The iconic pink building has been used for decades by Pima County agencies but they recently moved to a new Public Service Center building.Pima County property owners could pay about $1 a month less in property taxes next year under county Board of Supervisors’ budget action Tuesday.
The board gave tentative approval to the budget for next fiscal year, including a reduction of 10 cents in the primary tax rate. That came as a result of a judge’s ruling that the state unconstitutionally imposed $16 million in school funding expenses on the county last year and another $11 million this year.
The preliminary budget vote was for a spending package of $1.233 billion. In their final budget action next month, the supervisors cannot vote for more spending.
The tax rate reduction will reduce revenues and the overall budget by about the $16 million added last year to cover the state pass-along. The next budget would absorb the $11 million through savings in other areas.
The state has until the end of June, when the court's decision on the unconstitutional action is made formal, to decide if it will appeal.
