Tucson to Host Event for Nationwide Concert to End Gun Violence

Seven local bands will play at all-day event; proceeds will benefit Jan. 8 memorial efforts.

Monterey Court is set to host the local edition of a nationwide series of concerts this weekend aimed at stopping gun violence.

In 2007, Congress designated Sept. 25 as a day of commemoration for victims of murder. To mark the day, more than 400 events will be held in different U.S. cities for the Concert Across America to End Gun Violence, all linked through social media.

The all-day event in Tucson on Sunday will be held at Monterey Court on Miracle Mile and feature seven local bands. The event is free until 5 p.m., after which there is a $5 cover charge. All money raised and donations collected will be used in the community, including for memorial efforts for the Jan. 8, 2011 mass shooting in Tucson.

Pat Maisch, who identifies herself as “a fortunate uninjured survivor” of the Jan. 8 shooting, will be in attendance.

“It’s an event to make people aware of how many people are murdered each day, to help remember those taken, to help survivors heal and convince people that we can do something to help keep guns out of the hands of dangerous people and still keep the Second Amendment whole,” Maisch said.
