The head of the third largest school district in the Tucson area will step down at the end of the 2016-17 school year.
Amphitheater Public Schools Superintendent Patrick Nelson has been in the position for nearly five years, and has been with the district for 16.
He came to the district as the executive director of curriculum, instruction and development before becoming the associate superintendent and ultimately superintendent.
Nelson has worked in public education for 44 years, as a teacher, principal and administrator.
Amphi's governing board will begin the search for Nelson's replacement at an already-scheduled Jan. 10 meeting.
More than 14,000 students are enrolled in Amphi schools. The district stretches from central Tucson to the Pinal County line.
