William "Bill" Maciel, 91, has been assisting Elaine Marie Troy with the flowers since they met a year ago.
VIEW LARGER After learning how to make tissue paper flowers, Elaine Marie Troy decided to give them away for Mother's Day. Elaine Marie Troy was on her computer four years ago when she came across a video that caught her attention.
It showed viewers how to make flowers out of tissue paper.
Troy watched the video more than a dozen times until she got the knack. And a new tradition was born.
"So about a week later the light bulb went off - you can make make Mother's Day flowers and hand them out to the moms. And that would make them happy," Troy said.
"I've been making the flowers for four years now and I make 44 flowers because after the 44th flower I just get a little tired."
VIEW LARGER Elaine Marie Troy makes flowers out of different colors, but she says the most popular ones are pink. Despite the effort and time it takes to work on her hobby, Troy says she loves doing it each year. For 2017, she distributed them on a Sun Tran bus, her main form of transportation.
"I never ask for any money or anything, it’s just from my heart to their heart.”
She and her partner, William Maciel, plan to be at it again in 2018.
When she learned how to make the tissue paper flowers, Troy wanted to share them with other people.
