Tucson, Pima County cancellations, postponements or closures due to COVID-19

An ongoing list of Tucson and Pima County events that have been canceled or postponed.

Government

  • Tucson Mayor Regina Romero has declared a local emergency, and ordered most entertainment and sporting venues to close (including gyms, theaters, and museums). Restaurants are encouraged to offer delivery or drive-through service, but in-person dining is banned for now.

  • The town of Marana issued an emergency declaration

  • The town of Oro Valley has canceled its March 18 meeting and is closing most recreation facilities and canceling programs. Learn more here.

  • Tucson Water has canceled a public meeting on its proposed water rates set for Tuesday, March 24. Information and a public comment page are available on the city of Tucson website.

  • All Pima County Libraries and library book drops will close until further notice.

  • Sun Tran buses would continue regular service, as of Wednesday afternoon, but was closing its special services office. For updates visit the website

  • The city of Sierra Vista said it would close the Vista Transit Center and suspend bus service effective close of business on Friday, March 20. The suspension will remain in effect until Monday, March 30.

  • Tucson Environmental Services said it would no longer accept cash payments at the Los Reales Landfill until further notice. Credit cards, debit cards, checks, or rechargeable cash cards will be accepted as payment.

  • The U.S. District Court in Arizona announced Friday, March 13 all civil and criminal jury trials scheduled to start before April 10 are postponed until further notice.

  • Pima Animal Care Center is asking people to hold off on surrendering healthy animals for at least four weeks. The center is also looking for at least 200 "on-call emergency fosters," who can take in animals temporarily until adoptions pick up again.

  • Social Security suspended in-person services but is still offering online services.

Medical

  • Banner Health has restricted visitors to its facility starting the morning of March 19. Learn more at on its website

Education

  • Arizona's governor and superintendent of public instruction announced Sunday the state's schools will be closed until at least March 27.

  • The University of Arizona extended Spring Break until Wednesday, March 18, when classes resume fully online. Students have been asked not to return to campus unless they do not have a suitable living alternative. Updates on the UA website. Watch this March 16 update from the university via Facebook.

  • Arizona State University announced classes will be online through the end of the spring semester.

  • Northern Arizona University announced it is moving its classes online. Learn more at the university's website.

  • The Arizona State Spelling Bee, scheduled for March 21, has been postponed.

  • The Cochise College Creative Writing Celebration has been canceled for 2020 over concerns about COVID-19, or coronavirus. Scheduled for April 17 and 18, the two-day event typically attracts 75 to 100 people to Cochise College’s Sierra Vista Campus.

Outdoors

  • Tumamoc Hill is closed temporarily to the public as a safety precaution.

  • Saguaro National Park will remain open. It has closed visitor centers and interpretive programs and suspended fees until at least March 31.

Religion

  • The Catholic Diocese of Tucson is canceling or suspending all parish-based public gatherings until April 6. Bishop Edward Weisenburger says that includes public masses and all public Church events or gatherings. Wedding and funeral masses should be restricted to 10 persons.

Seasonal events

  • Pinal County Fair scheduled for Mar. 18-22, canceled.

  • The Fourth Avenue Street Fair set for March 20th-22nd has been canceled. This would have been the 100th biannual street Fair. The next one will be in mid-December. The group is offering a virtual fair

  • Fiesta Sahuarita,, March 28, canceled.

  • Taste of Oro Valley, March 29, postponed. Contact Rotary Club of Oro Valley

  • Cyclovia Tucson currently scheduled for Sunday, March 29, is canceled. Organizers expected 50,000 people to participate in the 4.5 mile bike ride.

Entertainment

  • The Pascua Yaqui Tribe said it is closing Casino del Sol and Casino of the Sun from 5 p.m. on Wednesday, March 18 until 8 a.m. Monday, April 13. Learn more.

  • TheTohono O'odham Nation-owned Desert Diamond Casino announced March 18 it would be closing its doors at midnight that night.

  • The Arizona Inn Hotel, restaurant and bar have closed until May 1. This is the first time the iconic institution has closed since 1971.

  • The Reid Park Zoo said it would close through March 31. For more info visit the website.

  • Bookman's is closing all its stores until March 28.

  • The Rialto Theatre has canceled all events until the end of March.

  • Biosphere 2 suspended all public activities effective, March 13, at 4 p.m., for an undetermined period of time.

  • Harkins Theaters has suspended showing movies at all theaters until the end of the month (March 31).

  • Hotel Congress has canceled or postponed events and shows and is moving to to-go service starting March 18, as is Maynard's Kitchen. For more details, see the venue's website.

  • The Fox Tucson Theatre says it will "suspend public performances ... beginning Monday, March 16th through Sunday, April 5th. At that time, we will reevaluate the situation and continue to work with our touring artist partners to determine if and when rescheduling is possible. Visit the website for more details.

  • Tucson Museum of Art is closed until further notice.

  • The Tucson Botanical Garden website said they would be closed until April 1.

  • The Mini Time Machine Museum of Miniatures will close starting Tuesday, March 17, through Tuesday March 31. For updates, visit the website.

  • Sahuarita Creative Arts Festival, March 14, canceled

  • The Invisible Theatre postponed Steve Solomon’s FROM BROOKLYN TO BROADWAY IN ONLY 50 YEARS the weekend of March 14 to Saturday, May 16.   • Tunes Around Town at Anamax Bark Park, Sahuarita, canceled, March 19

  • Monster Jam events scheduled for Friday, March 20, through Sunday, March 22, 2020, at the Tucson Arena will be postponed. The future date is yet to be announced.

  • UA Police Department's K-9 Walk For Cops set for Saturday, March 21, has been postponed. It will now be held on a Saturday in October of this year, 2020.

  • Tucson Cine Mexico, a festival celebrating Mexican cinema from April 1-6, has been postponed until this fall.

  • Tucson Folk Festival announced it has canceled for this year (April 3-5)

  • Topgolf announced it was closing its venues.

Sports

  • The McKale Ticket Office will not be open to the public for in-person assistance. Season ticket renewals, sales, and gifts will continue to be available around the clock at www.arizonawildcats.com.

  • World Baseball Classic Qualifiers at the Kino Sports Complex, scheduled for the weekend starting March 14, have been postponed indefinitely.

  • Arizona Distance Classic Half Marathon, Quarter Marathon and 5K, March 15, canceled. Contact info@arizonadistanceclassic.com

  • FC Tucson says the United Soccer League has postponed activities for at least two weeks. League play will start no earlier than April 18. For updates, visit the website https://www.fctucson.com/club-news

Other events

  • The United Way is cancelling VITA free tax-preparation assistance in the county through at least April 6.

  • The SAHBA Home Show scheduled for April 3-5 has been postponed. Organizers hope to reschedule it at a later date.

  • AACM Oro Valley HOA Forum, April 3, postponed. Visit aacm.com.
