A multi-year expansion project on the interstate highway that takes Arizona travelers north of the Phoenix area is underway.

Crews have begun preparation work on Interstate 17 between Anthem and the Sunset Point rest area.

The Arizona Department of Transportation anticipates a 23-mile construction zone will stay in place for the life of the project through 2025.

"However, when we talk about closing a lane for restrictions or for construction work, in general, that is going to occur in the overnight hours," said ADOT's Laura Douglas.

The project will widen I-17 from Anthem to Black Canyon City to three lanes in each direction.

It will also include an eight-mile section where two middle lanes will switch between northbound and southbound, depending on need.

That portion will run from Black Canyon City to Sunset Point rest area.
