Rep. Raul Grijalva D-Tucson, sponsored the legislation naming the Douglas port of entry after Gov. Castro who died earlier this month.

Grijalva said Castro was the embodiment of the American Dream.

“Though Castro suffered innumerable instances of social and racial discrimination, he overcame personal and institutional prejudice to attain the life he desired," Grijalva said. "Raul Castro’s career serves as dual role models not only for Mexican-Americans, but for all Americans.”

Castro was born in Mexico, grew up near Douglas, and graduated from the University of Arizona with a law degree.

He was the state’s first Mexican-American governor. Castro also served as U.S. ambassador to Bolivia, Argentina, and El Salvador.
