AZ WEEK: Fresh International Trade Propels Economy

More than one-third of all fruits and vegetables imported from Mexico cross into Arizona.

Chances are, if you have produce in your refrigerator, some of it crossed the U.S.-Mexico border. Arizona Week goes to the border to see what it takes to process 2 million tons of produce each day and how that changes the economy of Southern Arizona. Experts in trade and policymakers discuss the latest developments with Christopher Conover.

On the program:

  • Zac Ziegler takes us to the Mariposa Port of Entry in Nogales where more than one-third of all fruits and vegetables imported into the U.S. from Mexico enter the country. Up to 1,600 trucks rumble through each day.
  • Christopher Conover interviews David Farca, president of the Arizona-Mexico Commission. Farca was appointed to the commission by Gov. Doug Ducey in March.
  • Sapna Gupta, of the Morrison Institute at Arizona State University, discusses how policy change can drive trade.
  • Meet one of the most skilled drivers behind the wheels of a big rig at the annual state truck driving championships.
