Arizona last increased the gasoline tax in 1991. A memo from Pima County Administrator Chuck Huckelberry said it is time for that change. It is one of the top priorities for the county during the 2016 legislative session.
Pima County Board of Supervisor’s Chair, Sharon Bronson said no one likes to raise taxes. However, she said something must be done for roads.
“At some point we need to find a solution to how we do the road maintenance and it is gonna take a funding source and I hope the governor and the legislature step up and understand that,” said Bronson.
Pima County also wants legislative approval to allow the Regional Transportation Authority (RTA) to ask voters for a half-cent tax increase.
Tax increases are unlikely to pass the Republican legislature, especially during the 2016 election cycle.
