The Migration Policy Institute found the Biden administration issued 535 immigration-related executive actions over its first three years, compared to 472 during the Trump administration. The study says the changes impacted the economy and communities nationwide despite being largely overshadowed by the record number of people arriving at the border.

“People are coming because they’re seeking economic opportunity and also because of the push factors of instability, war and uneven recoveries from the Covid-19 pandemic in other countries around the world,” she says.
Biden’s actions include enhanced coordination with Mexico and other Latin American countries, stricter border enforcement to discourage unauthorized arrivals, and providing temporary legal status and work permits to hundreds of thousands of migrants.
“More people being able to access those work permits in the first place is really helpful in terms of getting people on the books and able to obtain jobs and support themselves and further the economy,” Bush-Joseph says.
