Pima County expects upcoming migrant funding to last through August

Pima County expects to receive at least 12 million dollars in federal funding from the recent Homeland Security appropriations bill to continue services to asylum seekers through August, after coming dangerously close to having to turn people away.

County administrator Jan Lesher told the Pima County Supervisors Tuesday that federal officials have assured them about the county’s portion of the $650 million dollars in the appropriations bill for short-term services to asylum seekers.

“It is our ongoing hope that we will be out of this business, but that the way out of the business for us is not to simply stop providing services and allow for a thousand individuals to be released, but staff is continuing to work with some of our other partners in the community to see who might best serve as our fiscal agent in the long term opportunity," Lesher said.

The county has served more than 400-thousand people since 2019, receiving federal funding in short-term tranches and repeatedly coming close to running out.
