In December 1970 an early morning fire swept through the Pioneer Hotel in downtown Tucson leaving 29 dead and 27 injured. At the time, the Pioneer fire was called the worst tragedy in the city's modern history.
The multiple votes on funding the construction of Catalina High School were contentious. The school board and parents grappled to find a solution and students were caught in the middle.
