There's an increasing interest in growing fruits, vegetables and other plants without using pesticides, herbicides or other nefarious ingredients, and there's a non-profit group that is dedicated to helping people accomplish this goal.

Tucson Organic Gardeners was officially established in 1992 although the organization can trace its roots to 1971, when friends who were organic gardeners began to meet once a month.

“The organization has been around for over 50 years so you have all those years of collective gardening knowledge from people who have been doing it, learning, and sharing for a very long time,” says volunteer board member Niccole Radhe.

Decades later, TOG continues to offer advice, education and tangible resources to help people reap what they sow.

Recently, there have been speakers addressing gardening for wildlife, cultivating native edibles, and providing information about Africanized bees, among other topics.

“The educational aspect is what really drew me to the organization. We have classes, field trips and hands-on workshops among other events,” Radhe adds.

If you'd like to see some plants and meet people in person, TOG is holding its Fall Garden Fair on Saturday October 25th where attendees can get free advice or purchase plants, seeds and other items.

The fair is being held at the Arizona School for the Deaf and Blind from 8:30 am to 2 pm at the Arizona School for the Deaf and Blind, 1200 W. Speedway Boulevard.
