Silvia Sanchez

Reporter

Silvia Sánchez is an award-winning multimedia journalist and storyteller with extensive experience in television, radio, digital media, and investigative reporting. Since beginning her journalism career in 2018, she has covered some of the most consequential issues shaping Southern Arizona and the U.S.-Mexico border, building a career focused on accountability journalism, public policy, immigration, and the stories that impact local communities.

A multi-Emmy Award winner and nominee, Silvia began her broadcast journalism career at Univision before joining Telemundo, where she reported extensively on immigration, border security, and issues affecting communities throughout Southern Arizona. Her reporting has taken her from large migrant caravans arriving in Yuma to investigations into alleged abuses by Border Patrol agents, immigration arrests, migrant deaths, search-and-rescue operations in the desert, and the challenges faced by Dreamers threatened with deportation. Through her coverage, she has documented both the human consequences of border policies and the challenges faced by migrants, first responders, and border communities.

Throughout her career, Silvia has interviewed prominent local, state, and national leaders, including U.S. Senators Mark Kelly and Dick Durbin; U.S. Representatives Juan Ciscomani, Raúl Grijalva, and Adelita Grijalva; Tucson Mayor Regina Romero; Arizona Governors Katie Hobbs and Doug Ducey; and a U.S. Attorney. She has also interviewed Donald Trump Jr. Her reporting and interviews have addressed consequential issues affecting Southern Arizona, including immigration policy, border security, public health, government accountability, and other matters of public concern.

Silvia has covered multiple presidential and local election cycles, reporting on candidates, political campaigns, and the issues shaping voters’ decisions. Her political coverage has included interviews with elected officials and candidates, providing audiences with perspectives on the policies and decisions that affect their communities.

During the COVID-19 pandemic, Silvia investigated disparities in vaccine access and inequities in the vaccination process for agricultural workers in Yuma. She questioned then-Arizona Governor Doug Ducey about the lack of vaccination clinics in the community, helping bring attention to the issue. A vaccination clinic subsequently opened in Yuma, and Silvia’s reporting earned an Emmy nomination. The story exemplifies her commitment to accountability journalism and to amplifying the concerns of underserved communities.

Her reporting has also explored the human impact of immigration enforcement through her coverage of Dreamers facing deportation. She interviewed U.S. Senator Dick Durbin, a key architect of the Deferred Action for Childhood Arrivals (DACA) program, about the targeting of Dreamers by U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement.

Among her Emmy-recognized work is a retrospective examining the career and legacy of former Santa Cruz County Sheriff Tony Estrada, which earned her an Emmy nomination. Across her reporting, Silvia brings context, depth, and a commitment to uncovering the stories behind the headlines.

A proud University of Arizona alumna, Silvia also served as an adjunct instructor, teaching the next generation of journalists. She now brings her experience across broadcast, digital, and multimedia platforms to Arizona Public Media (AZPM), where she continues telling meaningful stories that inform the public, hold institutions accountable, and illuminate the issues shaping Southern Arizona.

Outside the newsroom, Silvia is a proud mother of three. She enjoys experimenting with new recipes, working out, creating social media content, and spending time with her family. Silvia can be reached by encrypted message on Signal at silviasancheztv.520.
