Communities are our greatest assets. At the heart of Tucson, both the Tucson Arts Foundation and the Pima County Health Department share a simple but powerful belief: all healing is possible, and it begins when people come together. Through an initiative called SaludArte, artists, public health professionals, social workers, and volunteers have joined forces to confront some of the most urgent challenges facing our community—first during the isolation of COVID-19, and now in addressing drug use and the stigma that surrounds it.
At the core of the project is a conviction: art can help heal. Art can open a path toward healing where words alone may fail. The people behind SaludArte believe that public art—work created intentionally for shared spaces—can do more than beautify a city. It can create conversation, compassion, and connection. It can become a tool for public health.
Public health seeks to protect and strengthen communities through education, research, and policies that prevent disease and injury. Its mission is to reduce disparities, ensure safe living conditions, and nurture healthier lives. SaludArte extends that mission into the realm of imagination and empathy, transforming art into a bridge between struggle and recovery.
The dream of the SaludArte team is to create spaces of healing—places where anyone ready to take the first step toward recovery can find guidance, resources, and community. By confronting stigma and replacing it with understanding, the artists, organizers, and advocates behind SaludArte are sending a clear message to Tucson:
You are not alone.
We are your neighbors, your artists, your social workers, your community. We are ready to walk beside you on the path toward healing. Together, we can step out of the darkness and move toward the light.
