State Judicial Review Panel Checks in on 70 Jurists

The Arizona Commission on Judicial Performance Review will meet Friday in Tucson to vote on whether 70 judges meet judicial performance standards.

The judges are on the Pima County and Maricopa County Superior Courts, the state Courts of Appeals and the state Supreme Court.

Mike Hellon, a Tucsonan who is with the commission, said the group uses a survey of people who have appeared before judges for feedback.

"If there’s a certain number of responses that indicate a weakness in some area, we call them in to to talk about it," Hellon said. "In most cases it turns out to be something we are not particular concerned about."

Judges go through the review process after serving four years on the bench.

The results will appear in the Arizona voter pamphlet released by the secretary of state under judgeship retention.

"The voters have an opportunity to review our recommendations and decide if they want to adopt them or not," Hellon said.

The session is open to the public and will be at the JW Marriot Starr Pass Resort starting at 1 p.m.
