Tucson homicides go up in 2024, but stay below recent high

Data from the Tucson Police Department show that 66 homicides happened within the department's jurisdiction in 2024, an increase of 13 from 2023 but below the recent high of 77 in 2021.

The 66 deaths are more typical of the number of homicides in the decade so far. 2020 had 62 homicides in Tucson while 2022 had 63.

TPD data show that homicides were in the 40s in 2018 and 2019, the other years where data is easily available.

The final month of the 2024 saw four homicides, with two occurring in its final weeks. That total was almost one higher, as police responded to a deadly shooting around 2:30am on January 1 near 1st Avenue and Grant Road.

Crimes that have been given a classification code in the FBI's Uniform Crime Reports were also up in 2024, reaching 24,178. 2023's total for such crimes was 23,596. Those two years have the lowest totals in TPD's database.

The crimes listed in TPD's database are homicide, sexual assault, robbery, aggravated assault, burglary, larceny, grand theft auto and arson.
