Enrolled members of federally recognized tribal nations in Arizona can now receive driver licenses, instruction permits and ID cards bearing a Native American designation.

Arizona drivers who are enrolled members of federally recognized tribes in the state can now get driver licenses, instruction permits and IDs with a “Native American” designation.

Those who choose to update current credentials will need to file a new application, photo and show additional proof of enrollment in a federally recognized tribe such as:

  • Enhanced Tribal Card
  • Tribal Identification Card
  • Tribal Certificate of Indian Blood
  • Tribal or Bureau of Indian Affairs Affidavit of Birth

The new credential will have the words “Native American” printed below the photo and signature.

The option went into effect earlier this month, the Arizona Department of Transportation Motor Vehicle Division announced, after Governor Katie Hobbs signed House Bill 2852 into law last May.

The legislation was introduced in February by Democrat Rep. Myron Tsosie of Chinle, to the Arizona House Transportation and Infrastructure Committee.

ADOT’s announcement comes a day after Navajo National President, Bu Nygren, put out a statement that said there is no Immigration and Customs Enforcement presence currently operating on the Nation but to remain vigilant and keep proper identification on at all times.
