This is a developing story.

Tuesday's announcement

The Tucson Unified School District has announced its second potential school consolidation plan for next school year.

In a statement to local press Tuesday night, communications director Karla Escamilla said Superintendent Gabriel Trujillo is recommending Dunham Elementary School for consolidation into Marshall Elementary School.

On Monday night, Escamilla announced Trujillo’s recommendation to close Hudlow Elementary and merge it onto Sewell Elementary School’s campus.

About 135 students were enrolled at Dunham, an A-rated school, last year. It’s located along 29th Street between Harrison and Old Spanish Trail roads. Marshall is located about a mile east of Dunham along 29th Street.

At Marshall, there were about 270 students enrolled last year. The state gave it a B rating.

All four schools involved in the closure plan so far are on the east side of the district, a region Trujillo had said would be more vulnerable to potential closures. Both Dunham and Marshall are also enrolled at around 40% of building capacity.

Escamilla says more closure recommendations will be announced this week. The governing board will vote to approve the recommendations on Dec. 8. Next Tuesday, Oct. 27, the district will hold a press conference and a public hearing for commentary.

TUSD held a series of community engagement sessions last month to hear feedback from families, staff and residents.

Hudlow Consolidation

The Tucson Unified School District has announced its first potential school consolidation plan for next school year.

In a statement to local press Monday night, communications director Karla Escamilla said Superintendent Gabriel Trujillo is recommending Hudlow Elementary School for consolidation into Sewell Elementary School.

Around 160 K-5 students were enrolled at Hudlow last year, where there is one teacher per grade level. The school is located near Kolb Road and Broadway Boulevard. The state gave it a D letter grade for the 2024-25 school year.

Sewell is located near 5th Street and Craycroft Road. It’s a K-5 school that enrolled around 170 students last year and was given a B rating by the state.

Hudlow is run by principal Eva Almonte, who told AZPM earlier this year that she was working to develop the school’s literacy programs.

Hudlow Elementary School did not immediately respond to AZPM’s request for comment.
