Street parking banned near Nancy Guthrie’s home after media congestion

Street parking in part of Nancy Guthrie’s neighborhood will be temporarily banned starting Thursday, Feb. 26, Pima County officials announced.

The restriction comes five days after officials converted the street near Guthrie’s home to one-way traffic.

In a news release, the county said the parking ban is intended to protect public safety and relieve residents from “chaotic conditions caused by a large media and social media streamer presence in the area.”

Officials said the measure is designed to restore “normal conditions” and ensure access for emergency responders, including fire trucks, as well as service vehicles such as school buses, trash trucks and postal carriers.

Guthrie is the mother of “Today” show host Savannah Guthrie. Law enforcement officials say the 84-year-old was taken from her Catalina Foothills home on Sunday, Feb. 1, against her will.

Visitors have placed yellow roses, artwork, cards and small religious items near Guthrie’s mailbox, where neighbors previously posted a sign of support for the family.

The Pima County Sheriff’s Department will enforce the no-parking zone, according to the release.

The area has drawn national and international media outlets, along with independent livestreamers and true-crime content creators. County officials said the increased traffic has impeded delivery vehicles and made it difficult for residents and emergency personnel to safely navigate the narrow roadway.

The Catalina Foothills Estates Neighborhood Association requested the change to reduce parking and traffic congestion. County transportation officials said the decision was coordinated with the Pima County Sheriff’s Department and Rural Metro Fire.

Neighbors reported that trash trucks have been unable to service the area, officials said. Rural Metro Fire also raised concerns about emergency response access.

The restriction will remain in effect until county officials determine it is no longer needed.

Signs will be posted at each intersection within the zone notifying motorists that parking is prohibited on any road segment inside the designated area. Violators face a $250 fine.

What roads are affected by the parking ban?##

The no-parking zone includes Pima County-maintained roads bounded by North Campbell Avenue to the east, North Camino Miraval to the west, East Camino Miraval to the south and East Camino La Zorrela to the north.

Affected streets include:

The ban also applies to all connecting cul-de-sacs within the zone.
