What to expect at Safford hearing on federal funding

The Community Development Block Grant is a rotating federal funding initiative to improve low-income communities with public infrastructure, community facilities, housing, public services and economic development. It can also extend to parks, libraries and health clinics.

On Monday, April 13, citizens of Safford will be able to comment during a public hearing about how the money should be allocated.

Lance Henrie, Safford’s Public Works Director, said this year’s estimated value is the largest the town of Safford has received: around $291,000.

In past years, Henrie said the grant money went to sidewalks and road repaving.

According to the Arizona Department of Health handbook, “the purpose of public hearings is to provide opportunity for citizens to comment on the community/county’s proposed use of CDBG funds.”

The hearing will allow for public input tonight at 6:00 p.m. at the Safford-City Graham County Library.

A virtual Microsoft Teams link will be provided for those who cannot go in-person. A recorded livestream of the meeting will be available to watch on the City of Safford’s YouTube channel.
