Arizona Attorney General Kris Mayes is trying to stop tenants from being evicted at an RV park in La Paz County.
On Wednesday, Mayes’ office sent a cease-and-desist letter to the Pit Stop RV Park in Quartzsite, ordering its owners to restore electricity to the park and pause what it called an illegal eviction.
The letter alleges that park owners shut off power after a recent 48-hour eviction notice to residents. A press release from Mayes’ office says the notice “appears to be unlawful eviction activity.”
The letter says several elderly and disabled people, who are more vulnerable to extreme heat, live in the park. Temperatures in Quartzsite have passed 100 degrees every day this week.
The letter says the eviction, if confirmed, could break several state laws on tenants’ rights and consumer fraud, including the Arizona RV Long Term Rental Space Act and the Arizona Consumer Fraud Act.
It orders the park to restore electricity by 5 p.m. on Thursday, May 14. It orders park owners to stop “unlawfully” evicting tenants and asks them to “ensure that park residents are provided with consistent, functional electrical and water system connectivity at all times until their tenancies end in a lawful manner.”
"My office will not stand by while elderly and disabled Arizonans are placed in life-threatening conditions to force them out of their homes,” Mayes wrote in a press release about the letter.
Park management did not immediately respond to an AZPM request for comment.
