Tucson to combine economic development, climate, culture offices under one roof

At its Tuesday meeting, the Tucson City Council is set to introduce a new city agency: the Office of Community and Economic Impact, which will combine several existing city initiatives under one roof.

Those include the Tucson Resilient Together plan to achieve net-zero carbon emissions by 2030, the Somos Uno strategy for fostering Tucson’s cultural heritage and the Prosperity Initiative, a joint plan with Pima County guiding the local governments’ efforts to address generational poverty.

According to a memo by City Manager Tim Thomure, city staff see climate resilience, economic opportunity, cultural vitality and equity as interconnected drivers of prosperity and quality of life.

One of the offices under the new umbrella is the one responsible for bringing investment and jobs to Tucson.

That work will be done slightly differently now, according to Thomure’s memo. The city will intensify efforts to attract investment from Mexico. It will also create programs meant to directly help people find jobs and get workforce training.
