Free school supplies available to Tucson families this week

Most Pima County schools are welcoming students back next week, and families still have a chance to refresh their supplies in preparation for the new school year.

Arizona Bilingual Newspaper is hosting the 15th annual Kidz Expo at the Tucson Convention Center this Thursday, July 30, at 4 p.m. Children ages 4-14 can pick up free supplies, get health screenings and learn about other educational resources. The event is set to feature live performances, games and crafts for families.

The City of Tucson is also offering free supplies at the Marty Birdman Center on Castro Avenue Friday, July 31, from 5:30 to 7 p.m. It’s open to all students in grades K-12. Free food and haircuts will be provided. Parents and legal guardians can reserve a spot by calling (520) 791-3247.

Students in the Marana, Sahuarita and Catalina Foothills school districts head back in one week, on Monday, Aug. 3. Amphitheater opens its doors Aug. 5 and Tucson Unified starts on Aug. 6. Vail — which operates on a modified year-round schedule — started classes last week, while Sunnyside and Tanque Verde open doors this week.

AZPM is holding a back-to-school supply drive with the Boys & Girls Club of Tucson from now until Tuesday, Aug. 4.
