This week on Arizona Illustrated: experience Tucson without cars during Cyclovia; meet the family who have been serving up sweet treats at La Estrella Bakery for over 40 years; go behind the scenes of a major Mexican television production filming in the Sonoran Desert; and hear powerful stories of bravery from members of the IDD community.
Cyclovia in Tucson
Two times out of the year, the city of Tucson closes a stretch of road for non-automotive modes of transportation. No destination or race, Cyclovia gives skaters, riders and walkers an opportunity to get out and move. This event started in Bogotá, Colombia, gaining more popularity in the United States.
40 Years of La Estrella Bakery
La Estrella Bakery is one of Tucson’s most popular, family-owned, Mexican bakeries. As the first location on South 12th Avenue celebrates its 40th anniversary this year, generations of the Franco family look back and share memories of the bakery where they all grew up in.
Filmándo Coraje en el Desierto
Spanish Telenovela, Tierra de Amor y Coraje, a major TelevisaUnivision production, was filmed here in Tucson this summer. We had exclusive behind the scenes access to explore the arrival of the remake of the 70s Telenovela Hermanos Coraje. We interviewed famous Mexican producer José Alberto “El Güero” Castro, various cast members, and Film Tucson representative Monica Lopez. This story examines why international productions are choosing Southern Arizona over traditional hubs like Los Angeles and New York. Beyond the economic boost for local crews and businesses, the piece also highlights Tucson’s cultural significance as a borderlands setting where stories rooted in ranch life, family, and shared Arizona-Mexico identity can be explored.
In our own words – Brave – Stephanie Lopez
In Our Words: Brave seeks to help change that by creating a platform where individuals with intellectual and developmental disabilities can tell their own stories directly to the community. The event also reflects AZPM's and Tucson Spotlight's shared commitment to better understanding and serving the diverse communities they cover while fostering more authentic, inclusive journalism. AZPM and Tucson Spotlight extend special thanks to Tucson Jewish Community Center’s Taglit B’Yachad day program and ArtWorks for their partnership and support of this event.
