After two days of ballot-counting, the Associated Press has declared Democrat JoAnna Mendoza the winner of the race for Arizona's 6th Congressional District, defeating Republican incumbent Juan Ciscomani.

She unseats Ciscomani in what was one of the country's closest congressional races.

When the race was called Thursday afternoon, Mendoza held 53% of the vote, beating Ciscomani by about 8 percentage points.

The Mendoza team had declared victory the night of the election Tuesday, when the first release of results revealed an early double-digit percentage lead over her opponent.

While the AP results stalled, another election data analyst, Decision Desk HQ, projected Tuesday evening that Mendoza was likely to win the race.

“I’m ready to serve you, AZ-06,” she said from the stage.
