Department of Homeland Security documents published this week reveal new details about a possible ICE detention facility in the Town of Marana.
An 86-page Performance Work Statement — published on a federal government database — describes a facility that would incarcerate “approximately 513 male detainees.” Another note on the database, however, says the facility “must have a capacity of up to 775 detainees.”
The Performance Work Statement outlines a potential agreement between DHS and Management & Training Corporation — a private, Utah-based contractor that operates detention facilities in several other states.
Pima Resists ICE, a grassroots organization, released a statement Thursday condemning ICE detention practices and reiterating its opposition to the potential facility.
“Reckless federal immigration enforcement and ICE detention centers drain local resources including local first responders when called for back-up, and local natural resources,” the group said.
In a statement to AZPM, the Town of Marana said officials had recently learned of the potential contract between DHS and MTC.
“We have communicated with MTC and have been assured they are open to meeting with the Town and residents to address concerns and answer questions should the agreement move forward,” the statement from town officials said. “At this time, details have not been finalized.”
